The Second Half of Life program (work of Angeles Arrien) was enormously helpful and inspiring to me.
I took the course because I knew that I was in a rut and needed to shake things up. It did that and I am a changed person because of it. It provoked in me a deeper awareness of what I want out of life and helped me become a more authentic person. I had thought that I was an honest person; I came to realize that there is a difference between honesty and authenticity and now I strive for authenticity in addition to honesty.
The course helped me to see the importance of remaining open to life as I get older, instead of getting caught up in the silliness of modern life and becoming cynical and pessimistic. One of my favourite quotes from the study guide is from Vaclav Havel, the former President of the Czech Republic, who wrote: "I am not an optimist, because I am not sure that everything ends well. Nor am I a pessimist because I am not sure everything ends badly. I just carry hope in my heart." I am now aiming to "carry hope in my heart" and to remain open to the beauty of every day.
